After spending a very pleasant evening with designer and fiber artist Danny Mansmith this past Saturday, I realized we have given very little attention in this blog to the fashion community and its many up-and-coming designers. As many may know, the City of Chicago has elected the first-ever director of fashion art and events in Chicago, Melissa Turner, and is working hard to expand the city's fashion industry and international reputation. More and more boutiques are sprouting up devoted to independent fashion and emerging designers (such as Habit and Lissa on Maxwell). One designer I have been following over this past year is Abigail Glaum-Lathbury, a recent graduate of SAIC and designer with Habit. While it's difficult to track down a lot of information about her online, she was featured in this Chicago Reader spring fashion article written by Liz Armstrong and Heather Kenny. She also created costumes for The Seldoms for their recent performance with Claire Chase of International Contemporary Ensemble. My recommendation: set a Google alert for this gal and watch her go! I see nothing but great things on her horizon.
