Researching artist residency programs yesterday, I stumbled upon an artist and exhibition in Pittsburgh that inspired me to do a little further research into the Pittsburgh community and post a few recommendations. Pittsburgh residents - please feel free to respond to this post with comments and add your own recommendations for the Pittsburgh art, fashion, and independent design communities.
- Mattress Factory: catch the current exhibition, The Tom Museum by Tom Saver, before closing on May 1. Any artist that organizes a fishing outing as part of the calendar of activities during his exhibition earns an A+ in our book.
- Pittsburgh's largest indie craft fair Handmade Arcade - catch the show the 2nd weekend of November 2007
- Encouraging resuse and conservation, Construction Junction sells used and surplus building materials including everything from tile to insulation to architectural salvage such as mantels and moldings
- Emerging fashion design retailer Sugar Boutique - now under new ownership
- Modeled after the Pierogi2000 gallery in Brooklyn, see the works of emerging artists on exhibit and in the flat files at Digging Pitt Gallery
