Bucktown Arts Fest Review

Tromping around the Bucktown Arts Fest website in preparation for our participation, this weekend, in the 22nd annual celebration of the arts, we discovered a nice review from local poet and Bucktown PR rep Effie Mihopoulos. Dolan, along with artists Amy Arnold and Gabe Lanza, were the Best in Show award recipients from the 2006 fair. To highlight the Best in Show artists, Effie wrote brief summaries of each artist and his/her work.

Here is Dolan's review:
"Dolan Geiman’s artwork is chockfull of imagery, too. On his website, he has a whole section of tags that describes his work: wood panels, collages, constructions, assemblages, deer construction designs, floral folk art, panel paintings, pinup press prints, rustic salvage sculptures, songbird constructions, serigraphs, and wall art constructions. They all apply to some aspects of some of his work. Each one mythologizes a figure or object by highlighting it, making it heroically large against its neutral or complex background. Having grown up in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, he discovered a profound appreciation for the tangible and visceral elements that define rural America, and put them all into his work. On dirt road adventures with his father or on his own through the Blue Ridge Mountains around him, his adolescent years provided a catalog of visual experiences that has fueled his aesthetic and creative process. For a while, he was a guide in the George Washington National Forest. And his love of nature is obvious in his art, full of birds and roosters and other flora and fauna in general. Then of course, there’s also his Rescued Clothing, but that’s a whole other story. Stop by his booth and he just might show you a sample while he tells you the concept behind it."
