After dinner with friends during Bayou City Art Festival in Houston, we took a stroll through the downtown area of Houston on our way back to our hotel. Sadly, downtown Houston is pretty dead at night with the exception of a few restaurants, some bodegas, and a lot of homeless individuals. For this reason, the existence of a shop like The Tipping Point on Houston's Main Street could not be more important, a beacon of economic and retail rejuvenation for the downtown Houston community. We happened to wander into the store, hearing the sounds of a live DJ emanate from a modern-looking store on an otherwise darkened street. Needless to say, we were curious. As it turned out, the store owners had opened theirs doors to allow a friend to host a party in their space as part of their overall mission of community and reciprocity. The Tipping Point, after all, strives to be a "sneaker lifestyle destination", coupling a well-edited selection of sneakers with art, music, literature, and more. Speaking with one of the owners, The Tipping Point is part of a sincere and impassioned quest to bring cultural and retail diversity back into downtown Houston. If the stores that follow have a fraction of The Tipping Point's passion, I think Houston's downtown area is off to an exciting future...

“We are opening up a page on the NEA’s web site – www.arts.gov – where each of you, and any of your colleagues can post examples and stories of how art works if your own communities. I will also be posting dispatches from the stops on my tour.” - Rocco Landesman, NEA Chair
Very cool to read about The Tipping Point. It gives me hope. Parts of that city have had some interesting art happen over the years...
