Nature Corner: Volo Bog State Natural Area
After a 14-hour marathon in the studio on Saturday, we took a break yesterday and headed to the Volo Bog State Natural Area in Ingleside, Illinois for some hiking and bird watching, the only "quaking" bog in Illinois with an open water center. We'd highly recommend both trails - both the .5 mile Volo Bog Intepretive Trail and the 3.0 mile Tamarack View Trail, especially this fall when the needles of the unique deciduous tamarack turn golden yellow. We then walked around the Cuba Marsh Forest Preserve in Lake County, a poplar path for exercising, biking, and bird watching in the Barrington area. Our favorite spottings of the day: a Hummingbird Moth, Sandhill Cranes, Northern Leopard Frogs, and all the sphagnum moss you see on the Volo Bog interpretative trail.
We're always looking for trails and/or hiking destinations within a few hours of Chicago. Have one to share? Please post a comment. Or share with us your favorite websites for hiking and backpacking in the Chicagoland area.
Oh, and if you're already a fan of Volo Bog, take a moment to vote for the park in this Coca-Cola sponsored contest.
