Etsy visits Richmond for a specialized symposium on Thursday, April 3 at VCU in conjunction with the American Craft Council, VCU, and Quirk Gallery. The traveling program series aims to "explore the next generation of craft artists and their burgeoning influence in the market and culture." Learn more in this recent Storque article. After visiting the Etsy-ACC symposium, head over to Quirk Gallery and discover work by established and emerging artists chosen for their "uninhibited use of materials and forms, for juxtaposition of tradition and experimentation, and for refinement of vision and skill." We noticed ceramic work by Ed Brownlee and Jenny Mendes, two notable ceramic artists from the art fair circuit. Merging gallery, museum gift shop, and craft retailer, Quirk hosts regular exhibitions, represents jewelry artists, and also has a Quirk brand line complete with plates, t-shirts, and totes. It's a model akin with Rare Device's mission, serving the middle/gray zone in between craft and art, indie craft fairs and high-end fine art/craft galleries. We look forward to a pit shop at Quirk next time we fly into Richmond on our way to Dolan's home in Waynesboro.
