Bottom: Dolan Geiman, Crab Panel Painting, 2008
We're anxiously anticipating many pats on the head and pinches of the cheeks this October when we head to Dolan's hometown of Waynesboro for the Virginia Fall Foliage Festival - in no small part because Dolan's mother, regularly exhibiting art-fair maven Lisa Geiman, will also be a featured artist!

A real Southern belle, Lisa was born in Chattanooga, TN, and raised in Waynesboro, where she studied fashion design at nearby James Madison University -- also the alma mater of both Dolan and his grandmother. (Did you know 'alma mater' is Latin for 'nourishing mother'? Neither did we! Thanks Wikipedia! But can you be trusted...?!)
Around the time Dolan and his brother were born, Lisa began creating small watercolor paintings that quickly became very well known throughout Virginia for their bright colors and whimsical-take on Southern subjects (the homestead, wildlife, beaches (not the movie, though we're sure she likes that one)).
Many of her works can be customized, so a work like Love Notes (above and to the left) can include a personalized message. Nice one! We may have to borrow that one from mom...

Lisa would hold huge sales of her work at the home Dolan was raised in - a reconverted 1796 abandoned Civil War hospital - the lawn of which you-know-who had to mow. Sales from Lisa's artworks managed to put both Dolan and his older brother through college - that's a lot of patrons parking on the lawn...
She also became a staple artist at many of the South's art and craft fairs, including Dolan's favorite, the Virginia Fall Foliage Festival, and developed such signature themes in her work as multi-colored skies, heart-shaped trees, and portraits of often overlooked objects, like a beach chair or a recipe for crab cakes.

Recently, Lisa has been experimenting with new surfaces upon which to produce her artwork, like mailboxes, ornaments, and ceramic plates.
She's always been an inspiration to Dolan, introducing him to the art fair world (and many of its regulars!) at a very young age. You can see the same fasciation with Southern iconography and a love for birds and animals in Dolan's work, let alone that particular Virginia accent.
